One memory in particular must have made a huge impact on me because it is the first thing that springs to mind when I think of these particular girls.
After having a rocky start to Grade 7 - this is our last primary school year in QLD where old friendships start to strain as you grow from kids into teenagers - I found myself having to make some new friends. It was hard and I felt like an outsider after having the same friends for nearly five years. As we know kids can be nasty and I found one new girl in particular managed to turn my world on its end.
I spent a lot of time being a library monitor that year and hiding out. I was also in the school choir and we were doing a musical that year for our end of year concert. The musical was The Pied Piper.
There were four girls - me included - all wanting to be chosen for the council women in the musical but there were only three verses to the song that we were to sing. The other three girls were chosen to sing those three verses. I was devastated.
The next day two of the girls came in with a fourth verse they had written themselves so that I could participate. *cue "awwwws" here.
How nice is that? We were on the verge of teenagerdom where hormones and bitchiness tend to prevail. They could have just shrugged their shoulders and thought "bad luck" but instead did the nicest thing EVER for someone they obviously considered a friend.
And the teacher allowed it into the musical too. She also could have said "bad luck" but chose to embrace the act of kindness these girls had shown me and rewarded them for it. There was a fourth costume to find too but she let us go ahead.
It's been a long time since I've recalled that memory but it is definitely one of my best!
Thank you Kylie and Danielle. You probably never realised how much this meant to me. : )
